A small study in ceramics

Pottery
Since anyone can remember, pottery is one of the most fascinating and most creative crafts in the world. Nothing can be used in as many ways as clay, a natural material.

My pottery is not created on top of a potter’s wheel but in so called composition technique. Single slabs or pieces are being connected to a whole with the help of special slurry, a mix of clay and water that is being used for glue.

I use rich, smooth clay. It is very elastic and smooth and thus very mouldable. The hairline structures are excellently expressed and reinforced by the glaze.

Glazing
My pottery is solely hand-painted. To draw a clear dividing line between each detail and structure, I have to take care about how each single piece is painted and ensure the glazes are not running with each other. I exclusively use powder glazes mixed with water.

Firings:
As soon as the hand-made pieces are dried, I put them into the stove for biscuit firing. Biscuit firing is the first firing, a pre-firing at 900°C before the glaze firing. Here, clay turns into solid but not yet dense potsherds. It still takes on moisture so the glaze applies and clings well.

After glazing, the second firing takes place – the glaze firing at 1020°C to 1080°C. The sherd gets denser because the clay shrinks and loses moisture. The glaze melts into glass and ties together with the clay into a new material.
